Guangzhou

Guangzhou is the capital of of Guangdong province. Guangdong is home to approximately 12.6 million people making it one of the most populated cities in China. Guangzhou's history can be traced back to approximately 200 BCE and archeological findings have suggested that the city played a major part in Asian trade during that time, a role that it still has to this day.

From the breathtakingly beautiful Temple of the six banyan trees, and Huaisheng Mosque (dating back to the Islamic invasion of 758CE), to the Shishi Holy heart Cathedral (one of the oldest churches in China), Guangzhou is a virtual tourist paradise.

Situated very close to the cities of Hong Kong and Macau, Guangzhou has had an industrial boom in recent years, making it a rival of its sister cities to the south. The GDP of Guangzhou in 2006 exceeded approximately USD $ 70 billion with a per capita figure of close to USD $ 11,000, making Guangzhou one of the wealthiest cities in china.

Increased foreign investment and the development of many SEZ's (special economic zones) mean that Guangzhou has had the fortune of leading China's development in the international markets. Many foreign nationals are choosing to live and work in the city for the unprecedented opportunities that it can afford, and the local government is being extremely proactive in its approach to modernization and urban renewal.

In 2010 Guangzhou will play host to the 16th Asian games, leading to further investment and even more attention on the international stage.
