Local vs International Health Insurance

Our advisors work with a number of plans that can provide a wide variety of coverage options. Not only can we work with local onshore health insurance plans but we can also offer expatriates international health insurance plans which typically offer superior coverage, benefits and services.

International Health Insurance plans will typically offer a number of advantages that are unavailable in most local health insurance plans. This primarily includes the ability to cover your medical expenses internationally, rather than just in the country in which you took out the policy. International health plans are also typically globally portable and guaranteed renewable, meaning that you can take it with you when you move from city to city and country to country without any break in coverage and as long as you pay the premium you can keep the policy for as long as you like. The continuous global coverage offered by an international health insurance plan can be of immense benefit to internationally mobile expatriates who may need to relocate every few years, or those whose jobs require them to frequently travel to far flung locations.

While premiums for international health insurance are typically higher than a local health plan, international plans are usually community-rated while local health insurance plans are generally experience-rated. This means that local plans will raise your premium based on medical inflation and the claims made in the previous year, which makes years with unexpected health problems doubly painful when renewal time comes around. International health insurance plans on the other hand will base premium increases off of medical inflation and the average amount it cost to insure people in your age bracket.

We currently work with many international insurers that can provide you with coverage in China and Africa. Allianz, AXA PPP, BUPA, Interglobal, NOW Health and William Russell are just a few of the companies that can provide you with health insurance for yourself and your family.

Most of the insurance companies we work with can offer portable plans. An international medical insurance policy is especially made for expats living abroad, and they are tailored to fit the expat’s needs. Nowadays it is more common to work in different countries during a life span, and the insurance companies that we work with can especially cater the needs for expats working in different countries.

Depending on your needs and situation, we can advise on the benefits and different plans. Since you are going to Africa we would always recommend an insurance policy which provide you with medical evacuation. And since you have children, it is also important to find a plan which can provide you with outpatient benefits and annual health checks.
